ABOUT FRANK & ALLIE LEE
Frank and Allie Lee (Bryson City, NC) are a harmony-powered old time duo. Their April 2018 release, Roll On, Clouds, showcases their favorite songs from over two years of performing together. These pieces range from blues tradition (“Somebody On Your Bond,” “Roll and Tumble”) to bluegrass classics (“Standing on a Mountain,” “Cabin on a Hill”), yet remain rooted in the old time aesthetic. Frank’s nylon string fretless banjo is the dominant instrument, with guitar, slide guitar, and Allie’s banjo and harmonica adding to the musical texture.

Frank and Allie, core duo of longstanding string band The Freight Hoppers, have traveled extensively as touring musicians. Frank, a founding member of The Freight Hoppers, has impressed audiences all over the United States, Canada, and northern Europe with his signature clawhammer sound. Allie is a founding member of The Whipstitch Sallies, a band from Indiana that toured in the Midwest, North Carolina, Colorado, and Hawaii. Together, the pair is a powerhouse duo with appearances planned across the country, and they toured France for two weeks in May 2018.

In addition to performing, Frank and Allie screen print music-themed t-shirts, available on their website. They also organize an old time music retreat in the Great Smoky Mountains in late March called the Banjo-Fiddle Frolic.

Workshop Descriptions:

Frank Lee - Intermediate/Advanced Clawhammer Banjo Workshop

In this three-hour workshop, Frank will cover four dynamics of his clawhammer banjo playing that have crafted his specific sound: syncopation, thorough knowledge of the neck, playing tunes in closed chord positions, and altering tunings to create your own arrangements to tunes. Seven banjo tunes will be taught that incorporate these dynamics. The objective of this intensive study will be to enhance your repertoire of solo banjo tunes and learn skills to better accompany fiddlers and vocalists. Bring a recording device, tuner, and fingerpick if you wear it. Tabs will be provided for all the tunes that are taught.

Allie Lee - Intermediate Backup Rhythm Guitar Workshop

Can you transition between basic chords and hold down a beat but want to do more with your guitar playing? Allie will help you take your boom-chuck to the next level with this three-hour workshop! Bass lines and runs, chord options, and creating a groove are topics we will cover to help you improve your rhythm guitar style. Close listening to source recordings will be a discussion point for unpacking different rhythm guitar styles. We will improve our back up to fiddle tunes in D, G, A, and C. Bring a thick flat pick, a recording device and/or note taking materials, and a tuner.

Roll On, Clouds is available at www.frankandallie.com, as well as CD Baby, iTunes, & Spotify.
